3:45 p.m. The city of Akron is keeping its warming centers open amid the freezing temperatures and snowy conditions. The warming shelters were initially not scheduled to be open on Monday, however the power and gas outages in the city may have played a role in reversing the decision.
"We want to make sure nobody feels stuck at home, or maybe they don’t have a home. These temperatures are dangerous, people could freeze to death or end up in the hospital if they don’t have the right kind of shelter. We want to make sure that we’re always open to the community, whenever they need. That’s our #1 goal here with the community centers is to serve the community’s needs at all times. We feel this is a big one when it gets cold like this. The mayor’s office feels very strongly that we need to be open to the community when they need us the most, which is times like this," said Jeff Mourton, Community Center Coordinator for the city of Akron.
