COLUMBUS, Ohio — On Wednesday, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced a series of proposals for police reform in the state, which would improve the training, oversight and overall work of law enforcement.
What follows is a full list DeWine's proposals, which come in the wake of George Floyd's death while being arrested on Memorial Day in Minneapolis.
- A requirement for all law enforcement applicants to pass a psychological exam.
- The creation of a standard use-of-force definition and mandate that all agencies in the state report information on these incidents to the Ohio Department of Criminal Justice Services.
- A ban on chokeholds, except for in situations where deadly force is justified.
- Mandated independent investigations and prosecutions for all officer-involved shootings and all in-custody deaths.
- Body cameras for every member of the Ohio State Patrol.
- The creation of a law enforcement oversight and accountability board, including members of the law enforcement community, and also members of the public.
