NORTH BENTON, Ohio — Two people were taken to the Akron Children’s Hospital Burn Center after a fire broke out at the McDermott’s Lakefront Campground in Portage County early Sunday morning.

Firefighters with the Deerfield Fire Department were called to the campground on German Church Road in North Benton at 5:36 a.m. amid reports that multiple campers / trailers were on fire.

Upon their arrival, firefighters found four campers up in flames -- but none had any occupants inside.

Two people from one of the campers, however, were taken to the hospital where the extent of their injuries is unknown.

“The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but is believed to have started in the camper on lot 84 and quickly spread to the adjoining campers on both sides due to their close proximity, causing an estimated property value loss of $200,000.00,” according to a Facebook post from Scott Simmons, who is the Assistant Chief with the Deerfield Fire Department.
