STARK COUNTY, Ohio — A "contained barricade" incident in the Indian River Juvenile Correctional Facility ended early Sunday morning.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the youth involved are safe and in custody.
OSHP also stated that there were no reported injuries, and an investigation is ongoing.
Details of the incident were provided in a press release from the Ohio Department of Youth Services.
At approximately 12:15 p.m. Saturday afternoon, an incarcerated juvenile took possession of keys from a youth specialist in his unit. The juvenile began unlocking doors to other rooms in the facility.
A total of 12 offenders, ages 15-19, exited their rooms and ran to a nearby school building on the campus of Indian River.
Members of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction were deployed to communicate with the teens who indicated to officials that they were armed with makeshift weapons as well as construction tools from the trade vocational classroom.
After communications broke down and the 12 juveniles refused to voluntarily exit, ODRC officials entered the building to deploy pepper spray.
The teens underwent medical evaluations after the incident. Neither the teens or the staff sustained injuries as a result of the barricade.
The incident remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. All 12 juveniles are expected to face new charges.
3News' Emma Henderson was been in contact with a family member of a worker at the facility.
The family member said the worker was called in to help and "last heard from him at 3 p.m." They added that "lots of people have been quitting [from the facility] for their safety."
This incident comes just days after an officer at the Indian River Juvenile Correctional Facility was assaulted.
