The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSP) is investigating a crash that took the life of a California man in Stark County on Monday afternoon.

According to a release from the Canton Post of the OSP, the incident took place just after 12 p.m. on US 62 eastbound at California Avenue in Stark County's Nimishillen Township.

Ron Stalnaker was headed eastbound on US 62 in his 2020 Freightliner Semi with a loaded flatbed trailer at the time of the crash. Stalnaker, who is from Cuyahoga Falls, was traveling in the right lane.

Also going eastbound on US 62 in the right lane was John M. Diamond of Tracy, California. Diamond was driving a 2007 Ford Explorer.

Troopers say Stalnaker’s vehicle was starting to proceed forward thru a green light when he was rear ended by Diamond’s SUV.  Per witness statements at the scene, Diamond never slowed down before the impact.  He was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital. Stalnaker was not injured in the crash.

There is no word yet on if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
