CLEVELAND — Cuyahoga Valley National Park on Friday shared an update on its ongoing project to stabilize the banks of the Cuyahoga River.

To facilitate the work, the Lock 29 river access and parking lot in the village of Peninsula will be closed from June 24 to Dec. 1.

"Parking will be available at other nearby locations and visitors will still have access to the Towpath Trail and amenities in the Village of Peninsula," CVNP says.

As CVNP announced last month, about half a mile of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail south of Station Road will remain closed on weekdays until August 2. The Towpath north of Station Road is closed 24/7 until June 28 as crews resurface the trail after riverbank stabilization work was finished.

The project is aimed at stabilizing the riverbanks along eight sites within the 33,000-acre park where erosion has begun to imperil the Towpath Trail and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad train tracks. Work began in 2022 and is expected to wrap up sometime in 2025.

The riverbank stabilization project is federally funded through the Great American Outdoors Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
