POWELL, Ohio — A man on an extended work assignment in Ohio has won a $50,000 prize from one of last week’s Powerball drawings.
The Ohio Lottery says Alabama native Christopher Lowman won the money in the March 27 drawing, and will receive $36,000 after mandatory state and federal taxes.
He purchased the winning ticket at Powell Marathon, which is located at 3446 O'Connell Street just north of Columbus.
"I checked it like 10 times because it's not something that normally happens,” Lowman recalls. “I woke my wife up and said I think we hit something on Powerball, we just won $50,000.”
Lowman said he and his wife will pay off some bills and take a vacation thanks to their lottery win.
He was one of three winning tickets sold in Ohio that hit a $50,000 prize that night, while one lucky ticket nabbed $100,000.
The Powerball jackpot soared to $1 billion just hours ahead of the next drawing on Monday night.
Feeling lucky? Lottery officials say the odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are one in 292,201,338. The odds of winning a prize worth $1 million are listed at one in 11,688,053.52.
