MEDINA, Ohio — A man in Medina made a very lucky discovery as he was going through his stack of old Mega Millions lottery tickets -- one of them was worth $1 million.
He found it just in time, too, because Ohio Lottery officials say the ticket was just 26 days from expiring.
The winner, who is only identified as “Michael from Medina,” said it happened as he was checking his tickets on the Ohio Lottery site before throwing them out.
“I couldn’t believe it, just one of those things you don’t think is real,” Michael said. “My wife was working so the only one I could tell was the dog.”
Michael’s lucky ticket was purchased from North Court Beverage at 998 North Court Street in Medina for the Mega Millions lottery drawing on Oct. 10, 2023.
“After mandatory state and federal tax totaling 28 percent, he will receive $720,000,” according to the Ohio Lottery.
Michael said he and his wife haven’t decided how they plan to spend their winnings.
The winning Mega Millions numbers that night were 3, 8, 17, 46, 63 and Mega Ball 7.
Are you feeling lucky? The Mega Millions jackpot now stands at $792 million for the next drawing, which is set for Friday, March 15.
