Beachwood has a new Mayor. On Tuesday, Beachwood Councilman Justin Berns defeated incumbent Martin Horwitz to become the mayor of his hometown.
ELECTION RESULTS: See the outcome of every race and issue
Berns' victory brings an end to Horwitz's time as mayor, which consisted of a single term that wasn't short on controversy. In 2019, Horwitz was investigated for multiple allegations of harassment in the workplace and inappropriate comments, with the Beachwood City Council ultimately voting unanimously to keep him in office. One year later, the Cleveland Jewish News reported that the city of Beachwood had paid more than $79,000 in settlements and related costs over allegations against Horwitz.
A lifelong resident of Beachwood, the 51-year-old Berns' career includes stints as a volunteer firefighter, time with the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission and other city commissions. In 2010, he was selected to City Council to fill an appointment for an unexpired term. After losing elections for council seats in 2011 and 2013, he won an election to the City Council in 2015 before being re-elected in 2019.
