NEWBURGH HEIGHTS, Ohio — Federal investigators asked the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections in October for copies of Newburgh Heights Mayor Trevor Elkins’ campaign finance reports dating back years, 3News has learned.
The Ohio Elections Commission is also investigating Elkins spending of his campaign funds dating back to 2015 and is holding a Jan. 23 meeting in Columbus to review a case filed against the mayor by the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.
Elections board records from August show that officials questioned $20,000 worth of 2017 campaign expenses.
Elkins told 3News Tuesday that he was unaware of the federal subpoena and reiterated that has done nothing criminally wrong. He said he’s repaid money he used from his campaign account. The subpoena, which was delivered to elections officials on Oct. 7, also asked for the elections board's "underlying calculations" of its audit of Elkins' paperwork and for any communications between Elkins and his campaign committee.
"I have made technically violations," he said. "There are no criminal violations."
Elkins also said that Newburgh Heights has not received any subpoenas.
"This has nothing to do with the city of Newburgh Heights," he said.
Elkins said he is being sworn in as mayor tonight at City Hall for a third term.
