CLEVELAND — The top headlines on 3News for Wednesday include President Donald Trump’s response to Iran’s attack against two military bases in Iraq where US personnel were known to be present, speculation on how New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels plays in to the Cleveland Browns search for a new head coach, and career development opportunities with Tri-C and MetroHealth.

On Wednesday, Trump addressed the nation live after it was confirmed that Iran fired ballistic missiles at military bases in Iraq on Tuesday, at around 5:30 P.M. Eastern.

Trump said, "I'm pleased to inform you the American people should be extremely grateful and happy no Americans were harmed in last night's attack by the Iranian regime,. We suffered no causalities. All of our solders are safe and only nominal damage was sustained at our military bases.

"Iran appears to be standing down, which is a good thing for all parties concerned and a very good thing for the world. No American or Iraqi lives were lost because of the precautions taken, the dispersal of forces and an early warning system that worked very well."

The attack was in retaliation for a U.S. drone strike that killed top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani on Friday. In reference to that, Trump said: "Iran has been the leading sponsors of terrorism and their pursuit of nuclear weapons threatens the world. we will never let that happen. Last week we took decisive action to stop a ruthless terrorist from destroying American lives."

While Trump emphasized the U.S. does not want to use military force unless necessary, he referenced some sort of response was coming.

"As we continued to evaluate options in response to Iranian aggression, the U.S. will impose additional sanctions on the Iranian regime," he said.

Trump also called on other nations to respond. "Iran must abandon its nuclear ambitions and end its support for terrorism." Trump said. "The time has come for the UK, Germany,  Russia and France to recognize this reality. They must now break away from the remains of the Iran deal, or JCPOA."

Trump referenced that he wants to enable Iran to move past nuclear ambitions in favor of sustainable growth.

"We must also make a deal that allows Iran to thrive and prosper and take advantage of its enormous untapped potential," he said.

Trump added: "The United States is ready to embrace peace with all who seek it."

On Tuesday, Trump assured the nation in a tweet that "all is well" before promising Wednesday's address.

In sports news, speculation continues around the possibility of the Cleveland Browns hiring Josh McDaniels as the team’s new head coach, away from his current position as offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots, with at least one sports expert saying there’s no chance of bringing him home.

McDaniels is set to interview with the Browns on Friday, and the team has said they want to make a decision on who will take the helm for the foreseeable future by Saturday.

Mc Daniels has ties to Northeast Ohio as a Barberton native and the son of Thom McDaniels, who had a 26-year head coaching career that included stops at Warren G. Harding High School, Canton McKinley High School and Massillon Jackson High School.

Despite all this, on “The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima” on Cleveland’s 92.3 The Fan on Tuesday morning, Andy Gresh of CBS Sports Radio/WPRO in Providence, Rhode Island did not paint a bright picture as to McDaniels returning to his Northeast Ohio roots and taking over the Browns.

“Zero,” Gresh said when asked what the chances were of McDaniels coaching the Browns. “When you just look at the jobs that are open, look at Carolina for example, you’re motivated because there’s a new owner who’s probably ready to give you the store. You’ve got the seventh pick, you’ve got $60 million in cap space and you can get rid of Cam Newton. There’s that piece to it in terms of the other jobs to compare it to.”

It looks like we’ll know whether Gresh is right by Saturday.

For those looking for job training, Tri-C and MetroHealth are offering a free eight-week course that begins January 29.

The course, called “Workforce Success Seminar,” will be held at the main hospital campus as part of the inaugural Tri-C Access Center Session at MetroHealth.

The course is open to everyone, with online registration is required.
