Cleveland Guardians announce 2022 ALDS roster; Yankees leave DJ LeMahieu off roster

The Cleveland Guardians have announced their roster for the 2022 American League Division Series vs. the New York Yankees.

BRONX, N.Y. — Ahead of Tuesday night's Game 1 at Yankee Stadium, the Cleveland Guardians have announced their 26-man roster for the 2022 American League Division Series.

The Guardians' roster includes two changes from the roster that Cleveland utilized during its two-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays in the Wild Card Series at Progressive Field this past weekend. Heading into the best-of-five series with the Yankees, the Guardians have added starter Aaron Civale and relief pitcher Cody Morris to their 26-man roster, with the two right-handed pitchers replacing right-hander Nick Sandlin and left-hander Kirk McCarty.

The entirety of the Guardians' 2022 ALDS roster is as follows:

Catchers

  • Austin Hedges
  • Luke Maile
  • Bo Naylor

Infielders

  • José Ramírez
  • Amed Rosario
  • Andrés Giménez
  • Josh Naylor
  • Owen Miller

Outfielders

  • Steven Kwan
  • Myles Straw
  • Oscar Gonzalez
  • Will Benson
  • Will Brennan

Utility

  • Gabriel Arias

Pitchers

  • Shane Bieber
  • Triston McKenzie
  • Cal Quantrill
  • Aaron Civale
  • Zach Plesac
  • Emmanuel Clase
  • James Karinchak
  • Trevor Stephan
  • Cody Morris
  • Sam Hentges
  • Enyel De Los Santos
  • Eli Morgan

Meanwhile, the Yankees announced their own 26-man ALDS roster, which did not include infielder DJ LeMahieu or relief pitcher Scott Effross. A former two-time batting champ, LeMahieu was left off the roster while continuing to recover from a toe injury. Effross, a Twinsburg native who could have served as New York's closer in the upcoming series, is expected to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery.

The absence of LeMahieu could loom large for New York as the three-time All-Star had been one of the Yankees' most consistent hitters and possessed the ability to play multiple spots in the field. Without LeMahieu, Josh Donaldson is expected to start at third base for New York.
