Best of the best: Cleveland Guardians 2B Andrés Giménez named AL Platinum Glove Award winner

The award, voted on by the fans, goes to the best overall defensive player in each league. Giménez previously won the AL Gold Glove Award for second basemen.

CLEVELAND — There truly is no one better, and baseball fans overwhelmingly agree.

Guardians second baseman Andrés Giménez has been named the American League's Platinum Glove Award winner. The honor is given to the best overall defensive player in each league, selected after a vote by the fans from that year's Rawlings Gold Glove Award selections.

Fresh off securing his second consecutive AL Gold Glove, Giménez is the first second baseman to go platinum since the award's inception in 2011. The 25-year-old led all major league infielders with 23 defensive runs saved and 401 assists along with an AL-best 4.54 range factor (average combined number of putouts and assists) per nine innings.

Giménez is the second Cleveland player to win the Platinum Glove, joining former Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor's achievement from 2016. Ironically, Giménez came to the club in the 2021 trade that sent Lindor to the New York Mets.

Over in the National League, San Diego Padres right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. was the Platinum Glove honoree. He's the first right fielder to earn the award, and did so in his first season after moving from shortstop.
