Cleveland Guardians hoping for better weather, stronger attendance this summer

The Guardians rank 27th out of 30 MLB teams in attendance this season. Last year, they ranked 21st.

CLEVELAND — Grab a ticket, a cheap dinner and cold beer! It's summer in Cleveland and the Guardians are thankful you're here at Progressive Field.

"I was on a partial season pass during the days of the 455 straight sellouts and we brought the kids when they were very young," fan Steve Weiss said.

Decades of childhood memories shape the stands, even if a few more have been empty so far this year.

The Guardians are seeing an average attendance of just over 11,000 per game in the 35,000 seat ballpark thus far in 2022. They rank 27th out of 30 teams in Major League Baseball in attendance.

"It's been a rough two months getting to this date and this weather, we have the most rainouts in Major League Baseball, we have the least amount of home games in Major League Baseball, so we're ready to look forward and not behind," explained Guardians Vice President of Communications Curtis Danberg.

With a warm summer and loads of events and promotions on their way, fans say, there's just something about enjoying America's pastime in "The Land".

"Now we're a destination location and having a team to support that, to have a baseball team, a football team, a basketball team, the lake over here, Cleveland's a great place to be from," Weiss said.

Add in dollar dogs, $2 beer, baseball and then some fireworks, you're set for a great Friday night.

"This is a great park, when we come on Friday nights, it's packed, everyone's in a good mood, it's fun, we like it," fan Jim Schremms added.

More than 21,000 fans were in attendance for Friday night's win over the Oakland A's at Progressive Field, that's nearly twice the average so far this season.
