Damaria Franklin had 19 points and Kevin Johnson hit the game winning basket with 1.8 seconds left on his birthday as UIC edged past Horizon League-leading Cleveland State 76-75 Thursday night.
Johnson and Jace Carter added 16 points each for the Flames (9-13, 5-8 Horizon League), who trailed by as many as 15 in the first half. In fact, UIC never led until taking a 74-72 advantage with 1:07 left.
D'Moi Hodge led CSU (16-6, 12-3) with 31 points, tying his season high. However, the Vikings defense could not stop the Flames in the second half (55% shooting) and could not get a final shot attempt off as time expired.
Still first in the conference by a half-game, defending champion Cleveland State will wrap up its home schedule with Senior Day Saturday afternoon against IUPUI.
