At 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds, the first thing that stands out about Jedrick Wills Jr. is his size.
But according to Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski, there's more to the team's 2020 first-round pick than his big frame.
"This guy's a tough dude," Stefanski said in a conference with reporters after the Browns selected Wills with the No. 10 overall pick on Thursday night. "I've already texted with Baker [Mayfield], I think Baker's already texted with Jedrick, so I think we'll have a guy who's over there and understands how important that position is."
The "over there" that Stefanski was referring to is left tackle, where Wills will presumably take over as Cleveland's starter. Despite spending his college career at Alabama as the Crimson Tide's right tackle, Wills is believed to have the versatility and athleticism to slide to the left side, where he'll be tasked with protecting Mayfield's blindside.
"We do think that Jed is a very clean fit for our offensive system. And largely because of his athletic ability and his movement ability," Browns general manager Andrew Berry added. "They ran a lot of wide zone at Alabama too so it was a bit of an easy translation for us because it's not like he was in an offensive system where you didn't see him do some things in our run game that we're going to require of our offensive linemen."
Still just 20-years-old -- he'll turn 21 next month -- Wills is far from a finished product. But when it comes to the All-SEC first-team selection's obvious upside, the Browns' enthusiasm for the pick was hard to hide.
"When we do get him -- whenever that is -- there will still be work to be done. We know we're getting a young player," Stefanski said. "We know it's going to be a process of development and I trust that we have the guys to get it done."
