PARIS, France — Chris Ortiz, who competed in men's basketball for Team Puerto Rico at the 2024 Paris Olympics, has ties to Northeast Ohio as he's also a former student-athlete who attended Kent State University from 2013-2016.
Puerto Rico was officially eliminated from the competition after a loss to the United States sealed an 0-3 group stage record. Ortiz recorded 24 points, 10 rebounds and five assists over three games in Paris.
During his basketball career at KSU, Ortiz scored 630 points with 471 rebounds throughout 121 games.
"He helped Kent State share the Mid-American Conference regular season title in 2015," according to Kent State's site.

(AP) Carlik Jones scored 19 points and South Sudan rallied in the second half to beat Puerto Rico 90-79 in the Paris Olympics opener for both teams on Sunday.
It is the first Olympic basketball victory for South Sudan, which is playing in its first Olympics games after qualifying as Africa’s top finisher in last year’s World Cup.

Saturday, Aug. 3
- Puerto Rico vs. United States: 11:15 a.m. ET / 5:15 p.m. Paris
- United States defeats Puerto Rico 104-83. Puerto Rico finished fourth in their group and failed to advance to the knockout round with an 0-3 record.
