Corey Crawford, son of 3News' Jay Crawford, qualifies for long jump final at U.S. Olympic Trials

Corey will look to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic team at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday.

EUGENE, Ore. — So far, so good for Corey Crawford.

The son of 3News anchor Jay Crawford did exactly what he needed to do on Friday in the qualifying round of the long jump at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials in Eugene, Oregon.

His jump of 26 feet, 4 inches put him in fifth position, which was good enough to advance to Sunday's final. The top three finishers on Sunday will compete at next month's Tokyo Olympics.

Corey is currently ranked third in the U.S. in the long jump and had the seventh-longest jump in the world this year.

Jay Crawford and his wife Tracey are in Oregon to support their son this weekend. "Very good day for ⁦@crawfordbounce⁩ at the Olympic qualifier. Needed just one jump to make the finals on Sunday. Smooth easy run for a 26-4 jump. More to come on Sunday. #dedication," Jay tweeted after Corey's successful day.

The Olympics were canceled in 2020 after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the pandemic may still not be fully under control, the International Olympic Committee has deemed it safe enough to move forward with the games in Japan this summer.

“It's 2021, it's definitely going down! So, it’s definitely been a weird ride, but it’s definitely been different in a sense,” Corey recently told 3News.
