Cleveland-born fencer Lee Kiefer wins second consecutive gold medal in individual foil

PARIS, France — Cleveland native Lee Kiefer has defended her gold medal in fencing during the 2024 Paris Olympics.

She made history in Tokyo, becoming the first American to win an Olympic gold medal in individual foil. Her victory came after defeating Inna Deriglazova of Russia 15-13. Now, she's done it again, this time against fellow American Lauren Scruggs, 15-6.

Kiefer ran the table in the women's individual foil on Sunday to push herself into gold medal duel, dispatching Italy's Alice Volpi in the semifinal. Kiefer's victory was historic for herself and for her country; it was the event's first ever all-American gold medal bout.

  • Table of 32: defeated Martyna Jelinska, Poland 15-13
  • Table of 16: defeated Huang Qianqian, China 15-9
  • Table of 8: defeated Flóra Pásztor, Hungary 15-4
  • Semifinals #2: defeated Alice Volpi, Italy 15-10
  • Gold medal round: defeated Lauren Scruggs, USA 3:45 p.m. ET / 9:45 p.m. Paris: Airing live on CNBC

Kiefer, 30, was born in Cleveland before her family moved to Lexington, Kentucky. She attended the University of Kentucky.

Paris marks the fourth Summer Games for Kiefer after she also competed in the 2012 London Olympics and 2016 Rio Olympics.
