Cleveland native Lee Kiefer helps Team USA win historic gold medal in women's team foil at Paris Olympics

PARIS, France — Just days after winning a gold medal in the Paris Olympics during the women's individual foil, Lee Kiefer, who was born in Cleveland, secured another gold Thursday at the Summer Games as Team USA won a history-making women's foil team title.

Team USA -- which includes Kiefer, Laureen Scruggs, Jackie Dubrovich and Maia Weintraub -- defeated Italy in the gold medal match 45-39.

Kiefer contributed 14 of the Americans' 45 touches, going 14-13 overall in a tighter matchup than Team USA's 45-31 semifinal victory over Canada earlier Thursday.

The victory marked the United States' first-ever team gold in the event and the first time the U.S. won two gold medals in fencing at the same Olympics.

Kiefer's individual foil victory in Paris earlier this week was her second gold medal in the event after she previously made history at the Tokyo Olympics, becoming the first American to win an Olympic gold medal in individual foil

Kiefer, 30, was born in Cleveland before her family moved to Lexington, Kentucky. She attended the University of Kentucky.

Paris marks the fourth time Kiefer has competed in the Olympics.
