PARIS, France — Ohio boxer Morelle McCane, a native of Cleveland, lost during her debut at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Thursday morning.
McCane was defeated by Navbakhor Khamidova of Uzbekistan in the Round of 16 in a 3-2 split decision.
Despite losing, McCane already made history by becoming the first women's boxer from Cleveland to qualify for an Olympic Games.
Prior to Paris, the 29-year-old returned home to Cleveland before the Olympics to speak with 3News' Russ Mitchell at the City Club.
"I wouldn't be here without my community," she said at the luncheon while surrounded by family, friends, and local civic leaders. Many fellow alumni of Glenville High School were in the audience, wearing the school's red and black colors.
In addition to becoming the first woman boxer from Cleveland, the Glenville High School graduate is the fifth consecutive boxer from Cleveland to qualify for the Summer Olympics since 2008:
- 2008: Raynell Williams (Beijing)
- 2012: Terrell Gausha (London)
- 2016: Charles Conwell (Rio)
- 2020: Delante Johnson (Tokyo)
- 2024: Morelle McCane (Paris)
On Thursday, family and friends gathered at Market Garden Brewery to cheer on McCane in the Olympics.
