PARIS, France — The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris have arrived.
As all eyes in the sports world turn to the Summer Games, Northeast Ohio will be well represented with a fair share of connections to Team USA.
Athletes who have qualified for the Paris Olympics include Cleveland boxer Morelle McCane, Olmsted Falls pole vaulter Katie Moon and swimmer Hunter Armstrong from Dover.

Below is a list of athletes with Northeast Ohio connections who have qualified for the Summer Games.
Cleveland native Morelle McCane
- Boxing
- Team USA
McCane was the first Cleveland athlete to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. She punched her ticket onto Team USA after a unanimous decision victory over Charlie Cavanagh, the 2022 Elite World Championships silver medalist from Canada, at the 2023 Santiago Pan American Games. McCane is also making history, becoming the first woman boxer from Cleveland to qualify for the Summer Olympics.
Cleveland Cavaliers Head Coach Kenny Atkinson

- Team France | Assistant Coach
The new head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers is heading to Paris as the assistant coach for Team France. Atkinson was hired by the Cavaliers on June 28, after previously serving as the assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors and the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets from 2016-2020.
Cleveland native Lee Kiefer

- Team USA
Kiefer is returning to the Summer Games after earning gold during the Tokyo Olympics. The 29-year-old, who was one of the first fencers to qualify for the Paris Games, is headed to her fourth Olympics. She is currently ranked No. 1 in the world in foil.
Hartville native Marcus Christopher
- BMX Freestyle
- Team USA
Marcus Christopher, a Hartville native and Lake High School graduate, will be competing for Team USA in the BMX Freestyle. Christopher is heading to Paris after an amazing comeback from last year when he suffered a broken jaw and cheekbone from a devastating crash.
Akron native LeBron James
- Basketball
- Team USA
The St. Vincent-St. Mary graduate will return to the Olympics for the first time since 2012. James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, has previously played for Team USA in London (2012), Beijing (2008) and Athens (2004).
Dover native Hunter Armstrong
- Men’s swimming
- Team USA
Hunter Armstrong is returning to Team USA for his second Olympic Games. Armstrong qualified for the Olympics during the swim trials in Indianapolis. He will compete in Paris on Team USA’s men’s 4x100m freestyle relay alongside Caeleb Dressel, Chris Guiliano and Jack Alexy. During the Tokyo Olympics, Armstrong won gold with the 4x100m medley relay team.
Olmsted Falls native Katie Moon
- Women's pole vaulting
- Team USA
Olmsted Falls native Katie Moon will have a chance to defend her gold medal in pole vaulting as she heads to Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Moon, a graduate of Ashland University, qualified for the Summer Olympic Games after capturing second place in the pole vaulting Olympic trials with a mark of 4.73 meters.
Ashland University graduate Trevor Bassitt

2022 Ashland University graduate Trevor Bassitt is heading to his first Olympic games after finishing third in the 400-meter hurdles. During his time at Ashland University, Bassitt helped lead the Eagles to three NCAA Division II national championships.
Kent State graduate Corey Conners

- Team Canada
Conners graduated from Kent State University in 2014 and is appearing in his second Olympic Games representing Team Canada.
Kent State graduate Chris Ortiz
- Men's Basketball
- Team Puerto Rico
Ortiz attended Kent State University from 2013-2016. During his time with the Golden Flashes, Ortiz tallied 630 points and 470 rebounds in 121 games. Now, he is headed to Paris to represent Puerto Rico in men's basketball.
Kent State graduate Danniel Thomas-Dodd
Thomas-Dodd is returning to the Summer Games for the third time, having previously competed in 2016 and 2020. During her time at Kent State University, Thomas-Dodd was named the 2017 NCAA Shot Put National Champion.
Chagrin Falls native Lisa Goretta
- Officiant in dressage
The 1972 Chagrin Falls High School graduate is making her second appearance as an officiant at the Olympic games. Goretta, who also went to Rio in 2016, will be doing all the behind-the-scenes work.
