Cleveland Metroparks to shut down multiple roads in effort to improve social distancing between visitors

The roads will now only be open to pedestrians & bicyclists.

CLEVELAND — All of Ohio is currently under a stay-at-home order in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus, but that doesn't mean we can never go outside. In fact, we're somewhat encouraged to do so.

Besides things like going to the grocery store or getting your car repaired (if necessary), the order makes exceptions for going outdoors in order to walk your dog, get exercise, or even just to clear your head and get some fresh air. Provided you maintain safe social distancing, medical experts see it as a good way of coping with the crisis.

The Cleveland Metroparks is well aware of that, and says it has seen a surge in visitors over the past few weeks. While CEO Brian M. Zimmerman has pledged the parks will remain open and still want people to come out, officials are now taking new measures to ensure walkers, hikers, and bikers are safe.

Starting Wednesday, the Metroparks will close multiple roads to motorists to give people more space to spread out and walk. Essentially, these roads will act as 20-foot-wide trails that will allow those on them to stay at least six feet away from others.

"While some of these measures will temporarily impact the park experience, our number one priority is to provide the community with a place where they can enjoy Cleveland Metroparks in a safe manner," Zimmerman said in a statement.

The following roads will be open only to pedestrians and bicyclists:

Brecksville Reservation

  • Meadows Drive between Chippewa Creek Drive & Valley Parkway

Rocky River Reservation

  • Valley Parkway from Spafford Road to Berea Falls
  • Hogsback Lane
  • Rockliffe Drive

South Chagrin Reservation

  • Hawthorn Parkway between Route 91 & Arbor Lane

In addition, the following outdoor areas will be closed altogether indefinitely, as space is limited:

  • Edgewater Pier
  • Euclid Beach Pier
  • Fort Hill Stairs
  • Squire’s Castle
  • Restrictions to picnic areas

Several parking lots will also be restricted due to crowd control measures. For more information, visit clevelandmetroparks.com.
