FAIRLAWN, Ohio — The work week started off with a traffic alert for drivers in Summit County as the city of Fairlawn said early Monday there was a water main break that caused the closure of Sand Run Parkway between Shiawassee Avenue and Ghent Road.
“There will be no access to Sand Run Parkway from North Miller Rd,” according to a Facebook post from the city of Fairlawn early Monday morning. “Please use caution and use an alternate route.”
Although the roadway remains closed as of Thursday morning, the city of Fairlawn shared an update on Facebook on Wednesday saying crews began pouring new curb and gutter.
In a previous update Tuesday, the city of Fairlawn posted on Facebook that a repair to the water line on Sand Run Parkway had been made, "but the road will be closed until further notice to get it ready for pavement."
Meanwhile, a public works staffer who responded to the water main break was briefly trapped in his work truck when a sinkhole suddenly formed and the vehicle partially fell in, officials said.
The worker, whose name was not released, was not injured.
The man was alone in the truck when he responded to the scene around 5:30 a.m. The sinkhole formed a short time later, and the man was soon able to escape the vehicle and climb to safety.
Town officials estimated the sinkhole to be about 25 feet by 50 feet.
It's not yet known what caused the water main break or how long the repairs will take, according to the town's public works department. The break caused a loss of water service to about a dozen homes.
