CLEVELAND — Spring has arrived, which also means ODOT’s 2024 construction season is now underway in Northeast Ohio with a $1.7 billion investment into 248 projects throughout 17 counties.
“It’s definitely going to be a busy construction season here in Northeast Ohio," said ODOT Northeast Ohio Public Information Officer Amanda McFarland.
Of those 248 active projects, 193 are new for 2024.
The construction plans include 21 projects that are considered "major" with a value of more than $10 million.
During a press conference Tuesday morning, McFarland joined other ODOT officials to address the series of construction projects and traffic impacts across Northeast Ohio.
So what construction projects will impact your daily commute? Any big changes on the way that you need to know? Here are some highlights...
CUYAHOGA COUNTY
I-90 pavement replacement
"This project will replace the existing pavement along I-90 from the Hilliard Rd. exit ramp bridge to the I-71/I-490 interchange in Rocky River, Lakewood and Cleveland," according to ODOT. "Work will include bridge maintenance work, replacing median barrier and drainage, upgrading lighting and lowering the pavement under several structures for vertical clearance."
The estimated construction cost is listed at $136.3 million.
Construction is expected to start in the summer of 2024 with completion estimated for summer 2027.

SUMMIT COUNTY
I-77 widening project in northern Summit County between Ghent Road and Route 21
“This project is set to take 77 from two lanes in each direction to three lanes in each direction," said Ray Marsch of ODOT District 4. "Motorists traveling along 77 should be aware of the current lane restrictions. Right now crews are working on the inside lanes this construction season, and then next year they will begin working on the outside lanes.”
The completion date is estimated for the fall of 2026. The cost is $75 million.
Route 8 high-level bridge replacement
"This project is unique because of the way we are building it," Marsch said. "We are going to be launching the bridge, and what that means is we are building the bridge on the north end. So the first piece of the bridge that we’re going to build on the north side is going to be pushed across the valley and end up on the south end of the bridge. Launching is set to start here in summer and we hope to have the first bridge open for folks to travel on in summer of 2025. This project is set to have state Route 8 go from three lanes in each direction to four lanes in each direction."
Completion date for that entire project is estimated for 2028. The cost is $157.7 million.
