As Frontier Airlines starts new non-stop flights from Cleveland, company says it is considering Hopkins Airport as crew base

A crew base in Cleveland could potentially employ over 300 Frontier employees and generate millions in local wages.

CLEVELAND — Frontier Airlines' footprint in Cleveland continues to grow.

On Thursday, the ultra-low-cost carrier officially launched nonstop service from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Next Friday, Frontier will begin to fly nonstop from CLE to both Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT).

Next month, travelers from CLE will be able to fly nonstop to San Diego and San Francisco. All totaled, by the end of June, Frontier will serve a total of 17 nonstop destinations from Hopkins Airport, more than any other airline at CLE.

But that may only be the beginning of Frontier Airlines' future in Cleveland.

The airline has confirmed to 3News that it is also considering Cleveland for a future crew base, potentially joining cities like Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas, Miami, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Tampa.

What could that mean for Cleveland?

As a reference, Frontier is set to open a crew base at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport this month. The base at DFW is expected to employ up to 120 pilots and 220 flight attendants within its first year of operation. Combined with airport positions, Frontier expects to generate more than $78 million annually in local wages with further growth anticipated in the coming years.

There is no word yet on when a decision by Frontier could be made regarding a possible new crew base.

In the meantime, Frontier is celebrating its expanded service from CLE with introductory fares as low as $29 one-way. Click here to get more information.
