Storms trigger flood alerts, power outages throughout Northeast Ohio

It has been a wild weather morning for a portion of Northeast Ohio.

CLEVELAND — Did the overnight storms wake you up?

Wednesday morning kicked off with a thunderous bang as strong storms swept through Northeast Ohio with heavy rain and quite a bit of lightning. That's why the National Weather Service in Cleveland triggered the following flood alerts:

FLASH FLOOD WARNING

  • Cuyahoga County (now expired)
  • Geauga County (now expired)
  • Lake County (now exipred)

FLOOD WARNING

  • Lake County for the Chagrin River at Willoughby until 8:23 p.m. "The river is expected to rise above flood stage this morning to a crest of 12.1 feet," the National Weather Service said. "It will then fall below flood stage this afternoon."

FLOOD ADVISORY

  • Ashtabula County until 10:30 a.m.
  • Lorain County (expired at 7:30 a.m.)

North Olmsted police said a man was rescued after he became trapped on the roof of his vehicle in high water

The Cleveland Fire Department, meanwhile, tweeted that several cars were trapped in water on Jennings Road.

"All passengers safely out," fire officials noted at 7:37 a.m. "No injuries reported. Water slowly receding. Scene secured."

Meanwhile, FirstEnergy is reporting more than 1,000 power outages throughout Northeast Ohio. Here are the latest outage reports as of 9:40 a.m. Wednesday:

  • 726 outages in Lorain County.
  • 491 outages in Geauga County.
  • 258 outages in Cuyahoga County.
  • 156 outages in Lake County.

We also streamed live video of the flooded conditions in Cleveland along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, which was closed between E. 86th Street and East Boulevard.

“Just make sure you are allowing plenty of time on the morning drive because this is going to be the story through the morning commute,” 3News meteorologist Hollie Strano said.
