Lake effect snow hits Northeast Ohio: Real-time updates of how the storm evolved

Here are real-time updates as we followed lake effect snow and the weather impacts across the region.

CLEVELAND — Our first measurable snowfall of the season has come to a close after dumping some heavy snow in portions of Northeast Ohio...

But how did it all unfold?

We followed the snowy weather with time-stamped updates throughout the story below.

But first... Some important weather resources for you to check as we move through this lake effect weather event:

7:30 p.m. Our Kaitor Kay spent the day tracking the progress of plow crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation and the city of Cleveland. Read his report here.

6 p.m. As 3News at 6 gets underway, here's our team coverage starting with Chief Meteorologist Betsy Kling.

ODOT crews continue to clean up our roadways. Kaitor Kay has more on the efforts to plow out from the snow.

Tuesday was a rough day on the roadways with several major accidents. Danielle Wiggins has the latest.

5 p.m. Chief Meteorologist Betsy Kling is back with a look at how much snow we've received in Northeast Ohio. You can read more about this here as well.

2:53 p.m. Here's what the National Weather Service is projecting for our weather this evening:

2:50 p.m. The National Weather Service has canceled the Winter Weather Advisories for Lorain, Summit, and Portage counties. The advisory for Trumbull County remains in effect through 7 p.m. tonight. 

1:44 p.m. The Ohio Department of Transportation says I-271 North has now been reopened after the crashes involving more than 20 vehicles earlier today in Summit County.

12:55 p.m. The Ohio State Highway Patrol has provided more details about the I-271 crash in Summit County. There are actually two crashes being investigated. 

The first crash on I-271 North near Wheatley Road (milepost 10) involves a total of 13 vehicles, including three commercial vehicles. No life-threatening injuries have been reported. 

At milepost 11 on I-271 North, the OSHP say it is investigating a crash involving approximately 10 vehicles. No injuries have been reported.  

12:31 p.m. A portion of I-271 North remains CLOSED in Summit County at Route 176 due to a crash.

11:16 a.m. The National Weather Service in Cleveland just released preliminary 24-hour snow totals, which you can see below...

11:09 a.m. Traffic update: ODOT's map shows I-271 North is closed at Route 176 due to a crash.

11:01 a.m. While traffic has eased throughout much of Northeast Ohio, drivers are still encountering some snow-covered roadways as you can see here along I-90 at East 105th Street.

10:54 a.m. Cleveland police have blocked a portion of West 7th at Quigley after a truck slid off the roadway.

8:20 a.m. Beachwood police have announced a parking ban. See the full list of parking bans HERE

A No-Parking snow ban has been put into effect for the City of Beachwood. No parking on city streets is allowed until the snow ban has been lifted.

Pepper Pike police give an update on traffic:

7:37 a.m. Cleveland police have declared a snow emergency parking ban for the city, which is in effect from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

7:27 a.m. The city of Newburgh Heights has announced a parking ban, which is in effect until further notice. "Residents should move their vehicles from the village streets to allow the Service Department the opportunity to clear the streets."

Below is a video of snowfall accumulated in Mentor on Monday evening:

8:12 p.m. ODOT says they have 165 crews working across the state with that number expected to increase during the overnight hours. "Please give them room to work."

8:04 p.m. ODOT shares a reminder of which roadways their plows are responsible for handling...

7:20 p.m. As the snow prepares to arrive in Northeast Ohio, remember that the city of Cleveland has an interactive snowplow tracker to help residents monitor the response and see when their street will be plowed.

6 p.m. As we await the arrival of lake effect snow, here's the latest from our 3News Chief Meteorologist Betsy Kling.

5 p.m. Chief Meteorologist Betsy Kling is back with a check of our weather situation as 3News at 5 begins.

4:05 p.m. Kaitor Kay has spent the day with the Ohio Department of Transportation as crews prepare for the long job ahead of keeping our roads clear. 

4 p.m. 3News at 4 is underway and that means an update right at the top with "The Chief." 3News Chief Meteorologist Betsy Kling has the latest look at what we can expect as the lake effect snow comes our way.

2:30 p.m. The National Weather Service has added Summit and Lorain counties to its list of those areas under a Winter Weather Advisory from 1 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Portage and Trumbull are also included.

Here is what the NWS is reporting for Lorain and Summit counties: "Lake effect snow expected. Total snow accumulations of up to 5 inches. Greatest snow totals expected in far-northeastern Lorain County and far-northern Summit County. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph."

12 p.m. Meteorologist Carl Lam gives an updated look at what we can expect from the lake effect snow...

11:35 a.m. Taking a peek at the lake effect snow on radar. Not much of an impact on Northeast Ohio just yet...

11:16 a.m. ODOT gives an update with a reminder for all drivers to "allow extra travel time and give the plows room to work."

8:02 a.m. ODOT tells 3News they've had crews out working since midnight with approximately 230 crews working around the clock. CLICK HERE to see full details from ODOT.

6:09 a.m. Matt Bruning of ODOT says 207 crews are out working on the roadways. He also warns the Tuesday morning commute "will be very difficult."

5:49 a.m. The National Weather Service takes a closer look at potential impacts throughout various communities in Northeast Ohio -- including Ashtabula, Cleveland and Akron.
