Chagrin Falls braces for more rain just one day after flooding

The mayor said an isolated thunderstorm dumped more than two inches of rain in minutes.

CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio — People in Chagrin Falls braced for more storms Wednesday night, one day after a storm dumped water on them, flooding some businesses and streets.

Video taken outside Miller Plumbing off Bell Street that Mayor William Tomko sent to 3News, showed water pouring down a driveway. Other video 3News captured showed streets turned into streams.

Mayor Tomko said an isolated thunderstorm dropped 2.29 inches of rain on Chagrin Falls in about a half hour on Tuesday. It was enough in a short amount of time to overwhelm their storm water system, flooding roads and businesses and damaging basements.

“Anytime you have that that’s basically an act of God so you’re going to have issues. The poor people on the connecting streets they really got hit worse than we did here,” said Troy Young, a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

The F.O.E. saw a couple of inches of water in the dining area and more on the outside patio. Young said Tuesday night was supposed to be a big night for business there. Instead, it turned into a big night of cleanup as members gathered to remove the water.

He said they had pumps ready to go in case forecasted storms caused more flooding Wednesday.
