CLEVELAND — The National Weather Service (NWS) has announced that a tornado did touch down in two Northeast Ohio counties during Monday evening's severe storms.
The NWS conducted a storm damage survey with emergency management officials in Richland and Ashland counties and determined that an EF-1 tornado did touch down at approximately 11:33 p.m. and impacted both counties.
The tornado touched down approximately three miles west of Newville, destroying an outbuilding and damaging several trees. It eventually turned southeast and entered Mohican State Park, producing additional tree damage.
An EF-1 tornado has a wind speed range of 86-110 miles per hour. The NWS estimates that the tornado that touched down on Monday had a maximum wind speed of 105 miles per hour.
There were no injuries or fatalities reported.
Two days after the storm, thousands of FirstEnergy customers in both Richland and Ashland counties remain without power. Several cooling centers are available in the area.
