CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio — It's back, and (literally) bigger than ever.
Chagrin Falls' annual New Year's Eve Popcorn Ball Drop is returning this year after COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the 2020-21 event. This year's massive sphere of buttery goodness is appropriately named "Jupiter," and its resemblance to our solar system's largest planet is apparent from the get-go.
How big are we talking? Try six feet in diameter and more than 250 pounds worth, the equivalent of 13,488 normal popcorn balls. For comparison, 2019-20's ball, "Hugh Mungus," checked in at 233 pounds.
As always, the famous Chagrin Falls Popcorn Shop is responsible for making Jupiter a possibility, as well as "countless" volunteers from the Chagrin Valley. The massive spectacle will be on display outside the store from Dec. 15-30 before it is place atop the village's flag pole, which it will eventually descend to ring in 2022.
"Where else can you go to be up close and personal with 250 pounds of popcorn and not have to stand in line for hours to witness a ten second event," the shop wrote.
Besides the main event, Village Hall will be offering cookies and hot chocolate from 10:30-11:30 p.m. Once the clock strikes midnight, there will be confetti, music, dancing, the blast of the village's vintage cannon, and 200 regular popcorn balls being fired into the air by bazooka popcorn ball guns.
All money raised from the event will go towards Village Hall's ongoing renovations.
