AKRON, Ohio — A 27-year-old Akron man has been sentenced to life in prison for shooting and killing a drive-thru worker nearly a year ago.
Da'Quan Isaac received his punishment Tuesday after pleading guilty to charges of murder and felonious assault in connection with the death of 22-year-old Ahmed Alibrahim, a clerk at Borders Drive Thru on South Arlington Street. Isaac will be eligible for parole after 18 years behind bars.
According to police, Isaac murdered Alibrahim following a dispute over a Black & Mild cigar. Isaac attempted to purchase the item late at night on Dec. 12, 2023, but handed Alibrahim "a bill in poor and unacceptable condition." After the two argued, Isaac pulled a gun out and Alibrahim gave him the cigar, but before leaving, Isaac shot Alibrahim in the neck.
Alibrahim was pronounced dead at the scene, and U.S. Marshals arrested Isaac a little over a week later. At the time, Marshal Pete Elliott called the ordeal "one of the most senseless murders in our community," a sentiment Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich agreed with following Tuesday's plea deal.
"Ahmed Alibrahim was a kind and caring person, loved by his friends and family," Kolkovich said in a statement. "My hope is today's plea and sentence bring them some peace following this senseless tragedy."
Should he ever be released from prison, Isaac will have to register as a violent criminal every year for a decade.
