2 plead not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection with 7-year-old boy's death in Cleveland

Authorities say Demetrius Dunlap found a loaded gun and accidentally shot himself at a home in the 3200 block of West 30th Street last month.

CLEVELAND — Two people, who are facing charges of involuntary manslaughter and endangering children in connection with the death of 7-year-old Demetrius Dunlap in Cleveland, were in court Thursday morning to face a judge in the case.

During the brief hearing, Chartika Mock, 27, and Bryan Irby, 29, pleaded not guilty as a judge continued their original bond in the amount of $20,000.

Both are due back in court for a pretrial hearing at 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 27. The case has been assigned to Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Judge Deborah M. Turner.

The situation dates back to March 11 when authorities say Demetrius found a loaded gun and accidentally shot himself at a home in the 3200 block of West 30th Street. He was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center where he later died.

3News previously reported that Mock is the child’s mother and Irby is her boyfriend.

Demetrius was a first grade student at Luis Munoz Marin School.
