Glenville football, basketball player Te'Vion Cunningham dies in shooting

Cunningham was killed in Euclid, however police have not provided any details about the shooting as of yet.

EUCLID, Ohio — Glenville High School in Cleveland is mourning the loss of one of its students. 

The school announced on Sunday that Te’Vion Cunningham, who played football and basketball for the Tarblooders, died on Friday "due to gun violence."

"Te’Vion was an exceptional individual who brought so much joy, love, and positivity into our lives. Their presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing them," the school wrote on its football and basketball Instagram accounts. "In this time of profound grief, let us come together to support one another. Our thoughts and prayers are with Te’vions family and friends who are experiencing unimaginable sorrow."

3News has learned that the shooting of Cunningham occurred in Euclid. The Euclid Police Department has not provided any additional information at this time. 

“We were made aware of the unfortunate passing of Te’Vion Cunningham over the weekend," the Cleveland Metropolitan School District told 3News in an email. "We extend our deepest condolences on this tragic loss. Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time, and we respect their privacy during this ongoing investigation.”

The family of Te'Vion Cunningham released the following statement to 3News on Tuesday:

"With heavy hearts The Cunningham and Hill family acknowledges the passing of our beloved Te’Vion Rondale Cunningham. Te’Vion was an excellent young man, not perfect but excellence doesn’t require perfection. He attended Ginn Academy and New Beginnings Driving school. Te’Vion had an internship at Lincoln Electric, he played on the Glenville High Schools football team which recently won back to back championships. He also played on the basketball team. He had an incredible sense of humor and an infectious smile. He will be truly missed."
