BRECKSVILLE, Ohio — Officials were forced to shut down a portion of Interstate 77 Wednesday afternoon due to a traffic stop that quickly deteriorated into a standoff between the suspect and law enforcement.
Brecksville police say an officer initially pulled a car over on I-77 north near State Route 82 just before 3:15 p.m. for an unspecified violation. When the officer asked the driver for his license, he told the officer he was a "private citizen" and instead drove away.
Brecksville and Broadview Heights cruisers pursued the vehicle and managed to pull it over near the Wallings Road exit ramp. A passenger quickly came out once the car was stopped, but the driver remained inside, and a SWAT team was forced to come deal with the situation.
Following more than an hour of negotiations, SWAT officers shot pepper balls into the vehicle and forced the man out, and he was arrested shortly thereafter "with no injuries to himself or any officers on the scene." He was subsequently taken to the North Royalton City Jail.
The highway has since reopened.
