ELYRIA, Ohio — A 21-year-old Polk man faces charges of murder, aggravated murder and felonious assault after an indictment was handed down by a Lorain County grand jury.
According to a release from the Lorain County Sheriff's Office, the indictment against Kody Rutledge for the murder of Christopher Sayers Jr. was handed down on Friday. Each of the counts in the indictment carries a firearms specification.
Rutledge was taken into custody on a traffic stop by deputies of the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office assigned to the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force and is currently in the Lorain County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
On January 31, sheriff's deputies were dispatched to scene of the shooting in the 17200 block of Whitehead Road in LaGrange. The caller, who turned out to be Rutledge, had advised dispatch that he believed the shooting victim –Sayers – had died.
Deputies learned en route that the altercation was between a boyfriend (Rutledge) and ex-boyfriend (Sayers) after a child custody exchange had taken place. Investigators later noted that it was not a random incident and that all parties involved knew each other.
Upon their arrival, authorities found the 24-year-old Sayers had been shot in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene after lifesaving efforts were made.
Two firearms were recovered.
