Suspect charged in Solon crash that killed 85-year-old woman

19-year-old Jaymarlon Hayes of Berea faces several charges, including involuntary manslaughter and aggravated vehicular homicide.

SOLON, Ohio — The Solon Police Department has announced that a suspect has been charged in related to the pursuit and crash of a stolen car that resulted in the death of a woman last Friday.

The driver of the stolen car, 19-year-old Jaymarlon Hayes of Berea, was indicted by a Cuyahoga County Grand Jury on Wednesday for charges including Involuntary Manslaughter, Aggravated Vehicular Homicide, Aggravated Vehicular Assault, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, and Failure to Comply with Order or Signal of Police Officer. 

All charges are felonies and Solon police say additional charges may be filed pending further investigation. Hayes remains hospitalized and is currently under the watch of the Solon Police Department. He will be transferred to the custody of the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office once he is medically cleared for release.

Meanwhile, the passenger of the stolen car, a 20-year-old Cleveland man, remains hospitalized in stable condition. He is currently under watch of the Cleveland Division of Police. He will be charged once he is medically cleared for release.

Last Friday, a police officer on patrol witnessed a blue Ford Fusion traveling eastbound on Solon Road from Erico Drive on Friday night. Upon sight, the police officer realized that the vehicle was in the police database as a stolen vehicle that was robbed at gunpoint the day before.

The officer began an attempt to stop the vehicle, but the driver drove away eastbound onto Solon Road. The high speed pursuit continued into the Village of Bentleyville and Chagrin Falls.

Moments later, the Solon police officer lost sight of the vehicle, and the pursuit ended. Another neighboring police agency pursued the car before the Ford Fusion returned to Solon Road.

The Solon police officer put out stop sticks, resulting in the suspect’s vehicle losing control and crashing with two other automobiles, a Chevy Silverado and a Ford Econoline van. A female passenger in the Silverado died later Friday night. She has been identified by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office as 85-year-old Sally Schultz of Chagrin Falls. The driver, an 89-year-old Bainbridge Township man, also sustained injuries in the crash. He was taken to an area hospital, but has since been released

The driver of the van, a 37-year-old North Bloomfield man, was also treated for injuries sustained in the crash and released from an area hospital. 

The nature of the original theft of the Ford Fusion remains an active investigation by the Cleveland Division of Police.
