One of 3 teens shot in Cleveland's Slavic Village dies; no suspects in custody

Neighbors said the shooting happened during a party at a rental home. It was less than a mile away from another teen shooting in Slavic Village two days earlier.

CLEVELAND — One of three teenagers shot over the weekend on the east side of Cleveland has since died, in the second shooting in the Slavic Village neighborhood in two days.

More than four days after the shooting on Hamlet Avenue, there are pieces of police tape left behind and a home with several bullet holes in it. Neighbors told 3News the house is a rental and there is listing of the 2-bedroom, 1-bath house listed on Airbnb.

The host told 3News the reservation that weekend was made on booking.com.

The Cleveland Division of Police wouldn’t confirm details surrounding the shooting, but neighbors said there was a party or gathering at the home Saturday night. Then just before 1 a.m. on Sunday, police said someone fired shots, hitting three teenagers who were transported to the hospital.

On Thursday, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner said one of the victims — 18-year-old Camerin Turner — had died from his injuries. The Cleveland Metropolitan School District confirmed Turner was a student at John F. Kennedy High School, where he played defensive back and receiver on the football team. He also ran track.

The other victims include a 17-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl. They remained in the hospital.

Cleveland police said there was no one in custody related to the shooting as of Thursday, but added it was a “very active investigation”.

Authorities also continue to look into a separate shooting in Slavic Village that happened just a day and a half earlier and less than a mile away. Police say a 15-year-old boy was shot outside Central Catholic High School as classes were getting out last Friday.

On Monday, detectives arrested a 15-year-old suspect. That shooting prompted the school to cancel and adjust several on-campus classes and activities, including the school’s homecoming dance and football game on Saturday.

Police have not said the two shootings in Slavic Village are in any way related to each other.
