CANTON, Ohio — A member of the US Marshals Service's Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task force is recovering at home and in good spirits after being shot Wednesday afternoon while attempting to serve a suspect with an arrest warrant in Canton.
The shooting occurred on the 1700 block Regent Avenue Northeast, where police believed 33-year-old Aaron Pierre Thomas was hiding. Thomas has what Marshals call "a violent criminal history" and was wanted out of Virginia on charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault.
Authorities claim Thomas attempted to escape out a window before coming out the front door and firing "multiple" rounds at officers. One member of law enforcement was hit, as was Thomas when Marshals returned fire. The latter was rushed to a Canton area hospital in critical condition, but is now stable following surgery. Thomas remains in critical condition.
The unnamed deputy marshal, a member of the task force since 2013, did not suffer any life-threatening injuries. The individual was taken to a separate hospital, but has been released.
Thomas' loaded gun was recovered from the scene, according to officials. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation plans to review the shooting.
