AKRON, Ohio — The U.S. Marshals' Northern Ohio Fugitive Task Force (NOVFTF) has announced the capture of a 19-year-old man wanted for a deadly shooting at an Akron apartment complex earlier this week.
According to the NOVFTF, 19-year-old Isaiah McKinney was found Wednesday at a residence near the 600 block of Kling Street in Akron. Marshals report that as task force members and Akron police officers went in to arrest McKinney, he allegedly fired a shot inside the house. The NOVFTF adds that no task force members were injured and none returned fire.
After McKinney was taken into custody, Marshals say that a gun and a shell casing were recovered. The Akron Police Department is processing the scene, with additional charges forthcoming.
"The Akron Police Department continues to be a strong partner of the US Marshals Service. Today is another example of us working together to take a violent fugitive off the street, in an attempt to make the city of Akron a safer place to live for its citizens," U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott said in a statement after the arrest.
The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office reported that the fatal shooting happened on Monday, April 29, at around 10 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 1200 block of Everton Drive.
Upon arriving at the scene, first responders found a victim in the hallway of the apartment complex with a gunshot wound to the head. The victim, who has been identified as 37-year-old Gregory Bernard Dykes, was pronounced dead on the scene at 10:31 p.m.
In its preliminary investigation, Akron police believe that "an altercation" took place between the suspect and Dykes just moments before the shooting.
