Carjacking in Akron: Woman gets her 1-year-old child out of vehicle moments before it was stolen

Police say the suspect was wearing a blue coat and a black mask at the time of the incident.

AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Police Department is asking for the public’s help in finding a suspect who stole a woman’s vehicle in a carjacking Saturday afternoon.

Police say it was around 3:35 p.m. when officers responded to the scene in the 1300 block of Diagonal Road where a 33-year-old woman told them she was robbed at gunpoint.

“According to the victim, she was preparing to unload her vehicle when an unknown male suspect approached her and demanded the car,” according to a press release from Akron police. “The victim quickly got her 1-year-old child out of the back seat just before the suspect drove off with her car.”

The vehicle -- described as a 2019 GMC Acadia -- was recovered on Superior Avenue before 2 p.m. Sunday.

Police say the suspect was wearing a blue coat and a black mask at the time of the incident.

Neither the woman nor her child were hurt in the incident.
