City of Akron presents alternate summer programming

The City has partnered with Cleveland Clinic and 97.5 WONE to sponsor fun, safe entertainment options for summer.

AKRON, Ohio — The City of Akron has announced their first line of new summer programming enjoyable from your home, neighborhood or at a safe distance from others.

The Office of Integrated Development announced in a press release today the programs in which they have partnered with companies like the Cleveland Clinic Akron General and 97.5 WONE to present new interactive ways for the community to connect in fun and safe ways.

A program called "The Akron Games" provides challenges throughout the summer such as scavenger hunts or other missions to complete. "The challenges can be completed either through the GooseChase app or by using a flyer, which will be available to view or print at www.Lock3Live.com," the release stated.

The first and longest challenge in "The Akron Games" is presented in sponsorship with the Cleveland Clinic Akron General hospital. It consists of a challenged titled Walking With Akron: a summer walking series. The challenge begins this Friday, May 22, 2020 and will run through Labor Day. A new hunt from this challenge series will be posted each week with prizes award"ed for the highest total points and consistent participation over the 16 week span. You should note that in order to be eligible for prizes, you must use the GooseChase app.

"Cleveland Clinic Akron General is excited to partner with Lock 3 and bring scavenger hunts to the Akron community," said Brian Harte, M.D., President of Akron General. "These weekly games will provide participants with an innovative way to get some fresh air and exercise. Please remember to wear a mask and keep a safe distance from others to help prevent the spread of COVID-19," Harte continued.

In partnership with 97.5 WONE, the City presents "Rock the Lock Down", which is replacing their traditional summer concert series. Every Friday beginning on May 22, 2020, "Rock the Lock Down" will see sets of music that would have been played during the summer concert series. A full schedule online.

"Our first concert of the summer would have been an Aerosmith cover band, so this Friday the 22nd, WONE will be playing Aerosmith music from 8-10pm," said Tish Jernigan, the City's downtown operations manager. "All you h ave to do is tune in to 97.5 WONE to take part."

A third program presented by the Akron Recreation and Parks Division is "Akron Birds," which encourages bird watching in the City. This activity is an opportunity for all ages to explore the diverse variety of birds in the area throughout the year.
