ASHTABULA COUNTY, Ohio — The Ashtabula County Sheriff's Office is investigating after an 18-month-old Amish girl drowned in her family's pond in Rome Township.
According to a release from the sheriff's office, the incident happened on Thursday at the pond located at the family's Dodgeville Road property. The child was discovered by her mother after being missing for approximately 15 minutes.
"The child was removed from the pond and lifesaving measures were performed," the sheriff's office wrote in its release.
First responders from the South Central Ambulance District took the child to a helicopter landing zone, but she died as she was being flown to an area hospital.
Investigators determined that while the pond was surrounded by a fence, the gate was left open.
The Ashtabula County Sheriff's Office says the investigation is ongoing.
