NORTH CANTON, Ohio — Amid the excitement of the launch of Breeze Airways' nonstop service from Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) to Los Angeles this week, there is more reason for optimism about the future of the partnership between the airline and CAK.
A spokesperson for Breeze Airways confirmed to 3News that the airline is considering Akron-Canton Airport as a site for a crew base. The story was first reported by Susan Glaser of Cleveland.com, a partner of 3News.
Breeze, which is celebrating its third anniversary this month, currently has eight crew bases in operation and will open its ninth in Fort Myers, Florida this fall. It is also the largest carrier for CAK.
Currently, Breeze flies to 10 destinations from CAK:
- Charleston, SC
- Fort Myers, FL
- Las Vegas, NV
- Los Angeles, CA
- Myrtle Beach, SC
- Norfolk, VA
- Orlando, FL
- Raleigh-Durham, NC
- Tampa, FL
- West Palm Beach, FL
Passengers can also use "BreezeThru routes" (one stop/no plane change) to fly from CAK to New Orleans, LA and New York/Westchester, NY.
“Since we started flying in May 2021, Breeze has continued to add great destinations to our rapidly growing footprint, and now we’re the largest carrier from Akron/Canton with a dozen nonstop and BreezeThru destinations,” said Breeze CEO and Founder David Neeleman in a statement.
3News was also told that Breeze is anticipating adding more destinations from Akron-Canton Airport in 2025. Breeze President Tom Doxey told Glaser that international service could be included, with the Caribbean as a potential destination.
The potential of a Breeze crew base at CAK comes just months after Frontier Airlines opened a crew base at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. The Frontier crew base is expected to employ more than 400 flight attendants, pilots and maintenance professionals within its first year. Additionally, the new base is expected to generate nearly $80 million annually in local wages.
