32-year-old Cuyahoga County Jail inmate found dead; 2nd inmate to die in less than 24 hours

A 32-year-old inmate was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead during a routine check on Tuesday night.

CLEVELAND — A 32-year-old inmate at the Cuyahoga County Jail was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead on Tuesday, marking the second inmate to die at the facility in the past day.

According to the County, the man was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 9:10 p.m. following a routine check. The man, who the Medical Examiner's office identified as received lifesaving measures and was transported to MetroHealth at approximately 9:30 p.m. and was later pronounced dead.

The Medical Examiner’s office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death and an investigation is underway.

On Tuesday morning, a 47-year-old female inmate at the jail died after being found in "distress" in her jail cell. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office identified the woman as Melissa Musson.

"This is sad for the family and our staff," a County spokesperson said in a statement. "We’ve increased safety for inmates and Correction Officers by adding two drug detection dogs, two body scanners, issuing suicide prevention blankets, removing bed rails from bunks, adding cameras and radios, and working with MetroHealth to assure physical and behavioral health access."
