EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio — Authorities confirmed a shooting happened early Friday morning involving an East Cleveland police officer in the 1700 block of North Taylor Road.
Police say officers responded to the scene for a vehicle playing loud music around 5:57 a.m.
"Upon arrival, officers learned the vehicle was reported stolen out of Cleveland," police said in a statement. "At one point during the encounter with the occupants, shots were fired and the suspect driver was struck."
East Cleveland Police Chief Scott Gardner tells 3News the suspect was taken to University Hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
Chief Gardner said no officers were hurt in the situation. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation, which is a normal practice under these circumstances.
The Ohio Bureau for Criminal Investigation is handling the case.
