BARBERTON, Ohio — A fire in Barberton on Wednesday claimed the life of one man, the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Barberton Fire Department said.
It was around 10:06 p.m. when the Barberton Fire Department responded to the scene in the 400 block of 17th Street NW after neighboring residents reported flames could be seen from the front window of the residence.
According to authorities, firefighters made it inside the home and discovered 61-year-old David Polefko on the living room floor. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:36 p.m.
When firefighters arrived on scene at 10:11 p.m., the situation was still considered a working fire, which was considered controlled at 10:28 p.m.
The Barberton Fire Department was assisted by Chippewa, Coventry, New Franklin and Norton.
The incident remains under investigation.
