GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio — The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation says it is investigating a shooting involving the Garfield Heights Police Department on Tuesday that left one person dead.
A spokesperson for the Ohio BCI tells 3News that the agency was requested by Garfield Heights police to investigate an officer-involved shooting that happened on Tuesday afternoon. The BCI says no officers were injured as a result of the shooting.
According to a post from the Garfield Heights Police Department on Facebook, officers were sent to respond to a call of a potential suicidal male in the area of Hathaway Road. While on scene, police say multiple gunshots were fired.
3News' Bri Buckley reports that members of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) were at the scene in the 6200 block of Hathaway near the corner of Sunset. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner was also at the location.
"The Garfield Heights Police Department is currently investigating the incident as an officer involved shooting. We will continue to provide information as it becomes available," the department added in its post.
Tori Teague lives next door and told WKYC she was upset to hear there were gunshots. She also expressed her concerns for the unnamed man's wife, but was thankful none of her own family was at the home when it happened.
"It's just sad," Teague said. "Beautiful home, they have adult children, I know, and I just feel bad for them."
This is the fifth shooting involving police in the last two weeks across Northeast Ohio. Early Nov. 4, a man died in North Olmsted after exchanging gunfire with police. The next day in, Elyria a man was shot after allegedly trying to run police over.
Last Thursday in Euclid, when officers were serving an eviction notice, the resident opened fire on police. He later died.
Then, late Sunday night in Tuscarawas County, a sheriff's deputy fired at a vehicle following a chase.
The BCI says its investigation is "active and ongoing." Meanwhile, Teague shared her sympathy for the situation.
"I would say everybody reach out to people and check on them to see how they're doing," she said.
