PARMA, Ohio — Parma police have provided more details about what happened when a speeding vehicle allegedly struck a stopped car, crashed into a house, and hit a 4-year-old girl on July 4.
Police and fire officials say a car speeding down West 54th Street Thursday night first struck a stopped car, crashed into a house near the intersection of West 54th and Velma Avenue, and finally hit the child.
The driver who allegedly was behind the wheel has been identified by Parma police as 32-year-old Zachary Michael Pettry of Cleveland. Pettry has been charged with one count of aggravated vehicular assault and driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Additional charges against Pettry are pending.
In its police report, Parma officers say they found the 4-year-old girl with "a large laceration about her right eye" and "bleeding heavily from her head." The child was taken to University Hospitals Parma Medical Center and was released the morning after the incident.
No one in the home was hurt.
Police say Pettry had "a large laceration" on his head with "a large amount of blood." When asked by an officer if he knew where he was, Pettry allegedly responded by saying, "Florida."
Parma Municipal Court records show Pettry made an appearance on Monday and posted 10% of a $100,000 bond. His case has been bound over to a Cuyahoga County grand jury.
