MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio — A crash involving an SUV and a large semi-truck on State Route 528 left an 83-year-old Middlefield resident dead on Wednesday morning, the Ohio State Highway Patrol announced.
Authorities responded to the crash around 9:30 a.m. after a 2015 Ford Escape driven by Mary Ann Datko, 83, collided with the tractor-trailer.
Datko was pronounced dead at the scene and her passenger, 59-year-old Middlefield resident Martha Hershbeger, was transported via rescue squad to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, Ravinder Singh of Sagamore Hills, did not sustain any injuries.
After stopping at a stop sign and entering at an intersection eastbound on Shedd Road, Datko’s vehicle was struck by the 2002 Freightliner Semi as Singh traveled southbound. The impact forced Datko and Hershbeger, who sat in the front passenger seat, off the road and into a private driveway.
Troopers from the OSHP's Chardon post are currently investigating the crash. The Highway Patrol said that all parties were wearing seatbelts and that alcohol is not considered a factor in the fatal incident.
